Home energy guide
Home energy upgrade costs in Ireland
A gross-cost planning reference for energy upgrades and the wider renovation work that may sit beside them.
Last reviewed: October 2026
What these figures mean
Start with the gross cost of the complete project, then consider potential grants separately. These figures reproduce the existing DanannIQ dataset; they are not new market research or contractor quotations. Location, specification, access, dwelling condition and the exact scope can change the final price.
- Published benchmark: where the existing record identifies SEAI completed-project medians for January–December 2025, those medians are shown separately. They describe completed projects, not the price of your home.
- DanannIQ planning assumption: low/high spreads around those medians, retained market ranges, area rates and renovation tiers. The spreads are not SEAI published percentiles. Generic market-source labels in the existing record do not provide a publication-level audit trail.
- User-entered quote: an actual itemised contractor price for the scope you agree. The calculator accepts a separate installed battery quote to override its battery assumption. Other reference figures shown here remain planning ranges.
House-type ranges are reference cases, not minimum or maximum budgets. Solar PV sizing, window count, work area and battery capacity can adjust the calculator result. Do not sum every range on this page: include only your selected scope and check shared or overlapping work.
Source-period note: the retained DanannIQ record attributes its benchmark figures to January–December 2025. The SEAI current individual-upgrade median costs PDF (January–June 2026) now reports January–June 2026 and contains different medians. This page preserves the stored figures used by the calculator; it does not present them as the latest SEAI publication or silently replace them with the newer sample.

DanannIQ planning assumption · October 2026. Retained planning range; not an official or published median.
€3,000–€6,000 installed for 5 kWh.
Main cost drivers: Capacity, inverter compatibility, usable storage specification and electrical installation scope.
€3,000–€6,000 installed for 5 kWh, scaled linearly by capacity for planning only. Optional separate battery quote overrides the range. Unknown capacity visibly assumes 5 kWh; no published median is claimed. Confirm equipment, inverter compatibility and installation scope with quotes.
Budgeting wider renovation work
Extensions, conversions, kitchens and bathrooms can share access, services and finishing work with energy upgrades. They do not themselves receive SEAI energy grants. Keep the general renovation budget separate and ask quotes to show any supported energy measures explicitly.
Extension
DanannIQ planning assumption · 2026 planning range; retained market guidance, not an official median.
€2,200–€3,200/m² of the relevant work area.
Planning range, not a quote. Specification, glazing, structure, access, groundworks and services materially affect cost. Dublin/high-spec work may exceed the upper range; professional/design/statutory fees are additional unless explicitly included.
Attic conversion
DanannIQ planning assumption · 2026 planning range; retained market guidance, not an official median.
€1,200–€1,800/m² of the relevant work area.
Planning range based on usable conversion area. Dormers, structural steel, trussed roofs, staircase complexity, fire-safety work, ensuite/bathroom, fitted storage and finishes may exceed the base range.
Kitchen renovation
DanannIQ planning assumption · 2026 planning range; retained market guidance, not an official median.
- budget: €10,000–€15,000.
- mid-range: €15,000–€40,000.
- high-end: €40,000–€60,000.
Planning range, not a ceiling: high-end kitchens may exceed EUR 60,000 with bespoke cabinetry, premium appliances, stone/quartz worktops, large islands, structural alterations and plumbing/electrical relocation.
Bathroom renovation
DanannIQ planning assumption · 2026 planning range; retained market guidance, not an official median.
- budget: €5,000–€8,000.
- mid-range: €8,000–€15,000.
- high-end: €15,000–€25,000.
Planning range per bathroom. Layout changes increase plumbing costs; premium fittings/tiling and hidden water damage/substrate work increase costs. Dublin and large/high-spec bathrooms may exceed these ranges.
Grants are separate from gross project costs
Use the SEAI grants guide to identify potential support, then compare grant routes. Do not assume every measure qualifies or that a maximum award can exceed the eligible cost of that work. Rafter and floor supports are OSS measures in DanannIQ, not standalone Individual Grants.
Turn a reference range into a budget
- Confirm quantities: insulated area, window and door count, usable renovation area, PV size and battery capacity.
- Ask what the quote includes: ventilation, scaffolding, electrical work, heating distribution, cylinders, finishes, VAT and waste removal.
- Check roof, wall, moisture and floor condition before relying on the base scope. Keep an explicit allowance for unresolved work rather than assuming the high range covers every defect.
- List design, assessment, statutory and professional fees separately where excluded. Check payment timing against grant drawdown.
The methodology describes the maintained dataset and modelling limits. For a newly purchased home, the buyer planning guide helps sequence surveys, applications and renovation decisions.
